Anfield buzzed with Champions League anticipation as Liverpool hosted Qarabağ FK in a crucial 2025/26 encounter. The Reds aimed to assert dominance early, facing a determined Azerbaijani side looking to disrupt their European campaign on Merseyside. The stage was set for an intriguing tactical battle.
Liverpool immediately seized control of possession, dictating the tempo and probing Qarabağ's defensive structure. Their build-up play was evident, consistently advancing into the opposition's half, evidenced by a significant number of passes in advanced areas and successful crosses. The Reds created a notable ten big chances throughout the match, suggesting sustained pressure and a consistent threat, even if clinical finishing remained elusive. Their high Expected Goals tally further underscored their attacking intent and the quality of opportunities carved out.
The midfield, marshalled by players like Mac Allister and Gravenberch, worked to break down Qarabağ's lines, while wing play from Salah and Wirtz offered width and directness. Despite the attacking impetus and a healthy share of the ball, Liverpool's inability to convert their dominance into decisive goals kept the scoreline level. The visitors, meanwhile, focused on defensive solidity, aiming to frustrate the home side and exploit any potential turnovers.
The second period saw Liverpool intensify their attacking efforts, pushing higher up the pitch and increasing the volume of their forward passes. Their 56% possession share translated into a significant number of entries into the final third, with numerous key passes attempting to unlock the Qarabağ defence. The Reds registered twelve shots on target and a further fourteen corners, highlighting their persistent attempts to break the deadlock. The sheer volume of attacking actions, including numerous dribbles and successful tackles, kept the Azerbaijani team under constant duress.
Despite the overwhelming statistical advantage and a high Expected Assists figure, Liverpool found Qarabağ's resolute defence a tough nut to crack. The defensive unit, supported by their goalkeeper, worked tirelessly to repel the waves of Liverpool attacks. While the Reds enjoyed territorial dominance and created a substantial volume of chances, the final execution in front of goal proved to be the story of the match, leaving the scoreline unchanged.
The home side's attacking strategy involved a blend of patient build-up and direct attacking plays, with a high number of crosses and long passes aimed at finding openings. However, Qarabağ's organised defensive shape and effective interceptions meant that many of Liverpool's promising moves ultimately broke down. The Reds' inability to convert their dominance into goals underscored the challenge of breaking down a well-drilled defensive unit in a competitive Champions League fixture.
