Coppa Italia 2026/27
Coppa Italia action kicked off on August 14, 2026, as Parma hosted Catania in a keenly contested encounter. Both sides fielded their strongest available lineups, setting the stage for an intriguing tactical battle under the lights.
Parma asserted a notable attacking presence throughout the match, evidenced by their 92 attacks and a respectable 2.08 expected goals. The home side created three big chances, indicating periods of significant offensive pressure and close calls. Their build-up play saw them successfully navigate 157 passes in the opposition half, demonstrating a willingness to push forward and test the Catania defense. Ten key passes further highlight their efforts to unlock the opposition.
The tactical approach from Parma involved a blend of possession and directness. They attempted 23 long passes, completing nine successfully, while also registering 46 passes into the final third. Despite creating several opportunities, their finishing accuracy, reflected in 300 successful passes and 8 shots on target, suggests they may have struggled to convert their dominance into decisive goals. The team's defensive efforts were also solid, with 12 successful tackles and 16 interceptions.
Catania, while perhaps seeing less of the ball with 0.34 possession, focused on a disciplined defensive structure. They faced a high volume of attacks from Parma, but their commitment to tackles, with 20 attempted and 12 successful, alongside 17 clearances, aimed to stifle the opposition's advances. The team's ability to win 4 aerial duels out of 4 contested shows a strong aerial presence when defending set pieces or long balls.
The visitors' offensive contributions were less pronounced statistically, with fewer chances created compared to Parma. However, their ability to generate 3 successful crosses hints at potential breakaway threats or set-piece opportunities. The match statistics suggest a scenario where Parma controlled the tempo and created more, but Catania's resilience and Parma's potential finishing inefficiencies kept the outcome uncertain. The limited number of free kicks conceded by Parma (8) also points to a relatively clean defensive performance.
