An FA Cup tie at Anfield saw Liverpool host Barnsley in a 2025/26 encounter. The Reds looked to assert dominance against their Championship opponents, aiming to progress in the historic competition with a strong performance on home soil.
Liverpool dictated the tempo from the outset, enjoying the lion's share of possession as indicated by their 75% control. Their build-up play was evident, with 576 passes in the opposition half and 261 successful passes into the final third. Despite creating two big chances and registering an expected goals figure of 1.98, Barnsley's defensive organisation, marshalled by the backline, proved resilient. The Tykes focused on weathering the storm, limiting Liverpool's clear-cut opportunities despite the constant pressure.
The Reds' attacking intent was clear, evidenced by 129 attacks and 19 key passes, but Barnsley's disciplined structure prevented them from converting territorial advantage into goals. Crosses were attempted, with 33 sent into the box, though only five found their intended target. Liverpool's midfield, featuring Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, probed for openings, while the defensive unit of van Dijk and Gomez remained largely untroubled, contributing to their team's comfortable control of the game's flow.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Liverpool pushing for an breakthrough. Their attacking statistics highlighted a persistent effort, including 11 shots on target and a healthy expected goals tally. However, Barnsley's tenacious defending and a strong collective effort in breaking down Liverpool's advances meant the deadlock remained unbroken. The visitors, despite their defensive focus, managed to frustrate the Premier League giants throughout the encounter.
Liverpool's inability to find the back of the net stemmed from a combination of Barnsley's resolute defending and perhaps a lack of clinical edge in the final moments. Despite 11 corners and numerous forays into the final third, the Reds couldn't break down the visitors' stubborn resistance. The match statistics reflected a dominant performance in terms of possession and attacking intent, but ultimately, a failure to convert that pressure into decisive goals against a well-drilled Championship side.
The final whistle confirmed a stalemate, a testament to Barnsley's defensive grit and Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal. While the Reds enjoyed overwhelming statistical advantages in attack and possession, they were unable to find the decisive touch. This FA Cup tie served as a reminder of the challenges lower-league teams can pose, particularly when organised and committed to frustrating their more illustrious opponents.
