LaLiga action returned in 2026 with Real Sociedad hosting Atletico Madrid in a tightly contested affair. Both sides entered the pitch with clear intentions, aiming to assert dominance early in the new year and secure crucial league points.
Real Sociedad looked to control possession from the outset, building from the back with a patient approach. Their passing game saw them move the ball into the opposition half frequently, evidenced by 265 passes in that zone compared to 173 in their own. They created a respectable 13 key passes and 2 big chances, suggesting periods of attacking threat. However, Atletico Madrid's defensive structure, marshalled by the experienced Jan Oblak, proved difficult to break down, limiting clear-cut opportunities despite Sociedad's territorial advantage and 1.73 expected goals.
The hosts attempted to stretch the Atletico defense with 24 crosses, though only one was successful, highlighting the effectiveness of the visitors' aerial presence and marking. Sociedad's midfield, featuring players like Takefusa Kubo and Brais Méndez, worked to find openings, but Atletico's tenacity in midfield and willingness to engage in tackles, recording 27 successful ones, disrupted Sociedad's rhythm. The atmosphere was one of persistent pressure from the home side, met with staunch resistance.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Real Sociedad striving to unlock the Atletico defense. Despite generating a total of 8 shots on target and 8 shots off target, they couldn't find the decisive breakthrough. The xG of 1.73 for the match for Real Sociedad indicated they were creating chances, but the final execution or the quality of the Atletico defense prevented them from converting these into goals.
Atletico Madrid, while perhaps less dominant in possession with 0.45 share, focused on disrupting Sociedad's build-up and exploiting any turnovers. Their defensive midfielders and backline worked diligently to contain the threat posed by Mikel Oyarzabal and Gonçalo Guedes. The game became a tactical battle, with both teams showing a strong defensive organization and a commitment to winning duels, as seen in the 32 aerial duels contested by Sociedad. Ultimately, neither side could find the crucial goal.
The match statistics reflect a game where Real Sociedad held the initiative in terms of creating attacking situations and controlling the ball, but Atletico Madrid's defensive solidity and disciplined shape prevented them from capitalizing. The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought contest where the deadlock could not be broken, leaving both teams to reflect on missed opportunities and a point gained or lost depending on perspective.
