Real Madrid welcomed Alavés to the Santiago Bernabéu on April 21, 2026, for a high-stakes LaLiga encounter. With stars like Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Júnior leading the line, the hosts aimed to dominate possession and secure a vital victory.
Real Madrid asserted their authority from the opening whistle, dictating the tempo with sixty-two percent possession throughout the contest. The tactical setup deployed by the hosts allowed Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham to control the midfield engine room, facilitating a steady stream of attacking sequences. With Arda Güler orchestrating play alongside Mbappé, the home side consistently probed the Alavés defensive line. Despite the overwhelming territorial advantage, the visitors remained disciplined, forcing Real Madrid to work exceptionally hard to find gaps within a crowded penalty area.
The intensity remained palpable as Real Madrid accumulated twelve shots from inside the box during the opening exchanges. Trent Alexander-Arnold pushed high up the flank, providing width that stretched the Alavés structure, while Aurélien Tchouaméni anchored the defense to thwart counter-attacking threats. Although the hosts managed to register eight shots on target, Antonio Sivera proved to be a formidable obstacle between the sticks. The combination of precise passing and relentless movement kept the pressure on the visitors, who struggled to escape their own half under immense scrutiny.
As the match progressed, Alavés began to find pockets of space, recording thirteen attempts within the penalty area despite their limited time on the ball. Antonio Blanco and Lucas Boyé spearheaded several dangerous transitions, testing Andriy Lunin with five shots on target. The goalkeeper was forced into four crucial saves to maintain composure at the back. Both teams displayed a high level of physical engagement, leading to a combined twenty-six fouls and a pair of yellow cards as tensions simmered during the intense, back-and-forth tactical battle.
The closing stages saw both managers attempt to break the deadlock through tactical adjustments and sustained attacking waves. Real Madrid continued to force the issue, earning nine corners and utilizing their superior passing accuracy to keep the visitors pinned deep. However, the Alavés rearguard held firm, with their defenders blocking seven shots and Sivera producing five saves to deny the hosts. The match concluded as a grueling test of endurance, where both sides demonstrated remarkable defensive resilience while failing to convert their numerous high-quality chances into goals.
Ultimately, the clash showcased a stark contrast in styles, with Real Madrid focusing on intricate build-up play and Alavés relying on efficient, direct transitions. Despite the hosts recording 567 successful passes, the final scoreline reflected the defensive grit displayed by the visiting side. Both teams will look back on this encounter as a challenging tactical exercise where individual brilliance was frequently neutralized by collective defensive effort. The crowd witnessed a high-tempo display of professional football, even if the elusive winning goal remained frustratingly out of reach.
