The Stade Vélodrome buzzed with anticipation as France and Senegal locked horns in a crucial 2026 World Cup encounter. Both nations showcased their attacking intent from the outset, aiming to assert dominance in this high-stakes group stage fixture.
France began to assert control, demonstrating their attacking prowess with a notable 117 attacks throughout the match. Their build-up play saw them successfully navigate into the opposition's half on numerous occasions, indicated by 93 passes into the final third. Despite creating four big chances, the Senegalese defense, marshalled by Kalidou Koulibaly, stood firm, limiting France's effectiveness in the crucial attacking areas. Edouard Mendy in goal remained vigilant, ensuring his team weathered the initial storm. The French midfield, featuring Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot, worked to control possession, but Senegal's organized structure made breakthroughs difficult.
The tactical battle unfolded with France enjoying a slight edge in possession, dictating the tempo for periods. Their ability to move the ball forward was evident, though the final ball often lacked the precision to unlock the Senegalese backline. While France registered eight shots on target and accumulated a respectable expected goals (xG) figure of 1.89, they struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut scoring opportunities. Senegal, meanwhile, focused on a compact shape, looking to exploit any turnovers with swift counter-attacking movements, though these were largely stifled.
As the match progressed, France continued to probe, their attacking intent undimmed. The statistics reveal a consistent effort to penetrate Senegal's defense, with 16 dribble attempts and 12 successful aerial duels indicating a physical battle. However, the final product remained elusive, with a concerning zero successful crosses suggesting difficulties in delivering dangerous balls into the box. The expected assists figure of 1.4 also points to a general lack of clear-cut opportunities being manufactured despite sustained pressure and a significant number of attacks.
Senegal's defensive resilience was a hallmark of their performance, frustrating French attackers like Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. While France's 505 successful passes and 302 passes in their own half demonstrated their ability to retain possession, they struggled to translate this into a decisive lead. The match statistics suggest a game where France held the initiative and created more, but Senegal's disciplined approach and organized defense ultimately kept them in contention, preventing France from capitalizing on their statistical advantages and securing a more comfortable victory.
