Portugal opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a display of total dominance against Uzbekistan on June 23. Maintaining high possession, the European side controlled the tempo and dictated the flow of play throughout this highly anticipated international tournament encounter.
Portugal asserted their authority from the opening whistle, utilizing a staggering sixty-six percent possession rate to suffocate the Uzbekistan defensive structure. With Diogo Costa anchoring the back line and a midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes orchestrating the movement, the Portuguese side consistently pushed into the final third. Their tactical approach focused on methodical build-up play, evidenced by the one hundred and thirty-eight passes directed into the dangerous areas, forcing the Uzbekistan defense to remain compact and disciplined under immense pressure.
The attacking intent was clear as Portugal recorded one hundred and forty-four total attacks during the match. Pedro Neto and João Félix provided width and creativity, frequently testing the resilience of Abduvokhid Nematov and his defensive unit. Uzbekistan struggled to find an outlet, as the Portuguese press, led by the work rate of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Mendes, effectively stifled any counter-attacking opportunities. By moving the ball efficiently across the opposition half, Portugal dictated the rhythm, keeping their opponents pinned deep within their own defensive territory.
As the match progressed, Portugal continued to create high-quality opportunities, registering seven big chances and an expected goals value of 2.41. The team remained focused on precision, successfully completing five hundred and sixty-two passes while maintaining a fifty-three percent shot accuracy. Nine shots on target forced the Uzbekistan goalkeeper into a busy evening, while the creative playmaking from the wings, highlighted by five successful crosses, kept the defensive line constantly scrambling to clear the danger and prevent further scoring threats from developing.
Defensively, Portugal remained largely untroubled, showing great composure when required. Rúben Dias and Renato Veiga managed the aerial battles effectively, winning eleven of seventeen duels, while the team recorded twelve successful tackles to break up any sporadic Uzbekistan transitions. Even when Uzbekistan attempted to bypass the press with long balls, the Portuguese defensive unit stayed organized, recording sixteen clearances to neutralize potential threats before they materialized. This disciplined performance ensured that Portugal maintained complete control over the pitch throughout the entire duration of the fixture.
The overall statistical dominance underscored a professional performance from the Portuguese squad. By recording nine key passes and utilizing twenty-three successful long balls, they demonstrated a versatile approach to breaking down the Uzbekistan block. Despite the efforts of Eldor Shomurodov and Abbosbek Fayzullaev to find space, the tactical discipline of the Portuguese midfield prevented any sustained pressure. This comprehensive victory serves as a strong statement of intent for Portugal as they look to navigate the challenges of the 2026 World Cup group stage successfully.
