The 2026 World Cup stage was set as France and Morocco clashed on July 9th. Both nations entered the contest with high stakes, aiming to advance in the prestigious tournament. The atmosphere was electric as the starting lineups were confirmed, promising a captivating encounter.
France asserted their attacking intent early, generating an expected goals (xG) value of 3.04, indicating a significant threat throughout the match. They created five big chances, demonstrating their ability to carve out clear-cut opportunities. With 324 passes in the opposition half and 141 successful entries into the final third, Les Bleus controlled large spells of possession and pushed Morocco onto the back foot. Their 16 key passes further underscored their offensive drive, constantly probing for an opening.
The French side's build-up play was characterized by a willingness to move the ball forward, evidenced by 30 long passes attempted, 14 of which found their mark. While Morocco's defense remained resolute, France's persistent attacking pressure, including 12 crosses into the box, kept Bono's goal under scrutiny. The team's 8 successful dribbles also showcased individual skill in breaking down defensive lines, contributing to the overall attacking intensity.
Morocco, despite facing considerable French pressure, demonstrated resilience. While the statistics show France with a higher xG and more chances created, the Moroccan XI, featuring players like Hakimi and Ounahi, worked diligently to stifle French attacks. Their defensive efforts were evident in the 11 interceptions and 11 tackles made, aiming to disrupt France's rhythm and limit their clear-cut opportunities. The match statistics reflect a contest where Morocco had to dig deep defensively.
The midfield battle was crucial, with both teams vying for control. France's 48% possession suggests Morocco had spells where they could also influence the game, though perhaps not with the same attacking penetration. The sheer volume of French passes into the opposition half and successful passes indicates a sustained period of dominance, forcing Morocco into a defensive posture for significant portions of the game. The game's narrative was one of French ambition meeting Moroccan resolve.
Ultimately, the statistics point towards a match where France consistently threatened the Moroccan goal, creating a substantial number of high-quality scoring chances. Their attacking statistics, including a high number of shots on target and key passes, paint a picture of a team that was constantly on the offensive. Morocco's task was to weather this storm and capitalize on any opportunities that arose, making for a tense and closely fought World Cup encounter.
